Ice Dams. How to prevent them, identify them and what to do them if your house has them.

Ice dams are a big problem in Minnesota and other very cold states, but not every home is prone to them and some years are worse than others for having them form. So what is going on?

The Ice Dam Company is a great resource for us all, and luckily they are based right here in Hopkins, MN. In this short article, they discuss what ice dams are, how to prevent them, how to identify them and what to do about them if you have them.

As part of every home watch visit, we at Snowy Owl Home Watch employees walk around the exterior of your home as well as

the inside. In the winter, one of the many things we look for

are forming ice dams so we can stay ahead of any problems.

We also are looking at the ceilings inside, watching for any

possible water intrusion.

Water Softeners. To bypass or not to
bypass while you are away.

There are so many things to think about when you are leaving your home for an extended time. It's very likely your water softener isn't on your list, but it should be. The general recommendation is to shut your water softener off or turn it to bypass while you are away. Why? Unnecessary wear and tear and salt usage are the biggest two reasons.

If you choose to shut your water softener off or unplug it, you will likely lose all of your settings when you turn it back on. The easiest and still well effective way to handle your water softener is to set it to bypass. If you forget, we at Snowy Owl will take care of that for you.

What does setting it to bypass mean?

When is it a good idea?

How do you do it?
